Tom Tiffany says U.S. must end war with Iran just hours before voting to continue operations
Just hours before the deciding vote in Congress to continue the war with Iran, Republican candidate for Wisconsin governor Tom Tiffany stated the war needs to end.
Tiffany, the U.S. congressman for the state’s 7th district, appeared May 14 on the DrydenWire podcast. He was asked by Ben Dryden about the ongoing war in Iran.
“Yeah, so that conflict continues. My position is it’s time to wrap up the war,” Tiffany said. “We have degraded Iran’s nuclear and military capability. Most of their ships are in the bottom of the sea, and we’ve largely degraded their nuclear capability. It’s time to wrap things up and come back home.”
Dryden then asked Tiffany why some are angry with President Donald Trump and his war effort which has resulted in higher gas prices.
“I think, I mean, you’d have to ask the man on the street,” Tiffany said. “But I mean, what I hear from people, It’s, some people are disappointed that there is this conflict that’s going on in Iran and then to have the offshoot of it be the uncertainty that leads to higher gas prices. And people are disappointed in those two things. That’s why people do not, why some people are unhappy with that, but that’s why I say wrap it up.
It’s unclear when Tiffany recorded the episode but it was posted just hours before he and Congress voted on a bill to roll back Trump’s war powers. The vote was 212-212, largely along party lines, and Tiffany voted Nay to the roll back. The Speaker of the House broke the tie also voting to continue the war.
The war began Feb. 28 after the U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes on Middle Eastern country, killing several Iranian officials, including the country’s leader. Thousands of Iranians have been killed or wounded and more than a dozen U.S. military personnel have been killed.
Tiffany’s campaign didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, a candidate for governor on the Democratic Party side, released a statement.
“Tom Tiffany lied to Wisconsinites—plain and simple,” he said.
“He went on a podcast and told his constituents he wanted to end Trump’s illegal war in Iran. Then, hours later, he cast the deciding vote to keep it going. Tiffany thought no one would notice—because that’s how out-of-touch DC politicians think.
“But Wisconsinites are noticing; every time a family hits the gas pump, every time a farmer checks the price of diesel and fertilizer, and every time a small business owner wonders how they’re going to make it through the month.
“Tom Tiffany owns every one of Trump’s massive price hikes, and no amount of lying changes that. His record tells the truth: he’s voted with Trump 100% of the time. He voted to rip away healthcare, cast the deciding vote to continue Trump’s farm-killing tariffs, and rubber-stamped an illegal war that has cost American lives and sent gas prices skyrocketing.
“Wisconsinites can’t afford Tom Tiffany. And we can’t trust him either.”
